Mourvedre [Mourvèdre]
This grape originated in Spain. Later it was introduced to France with relative success yet the best growing areas of this grape still remain to be the Mediterranean Spain. Apart from Spain, California and France are known to grow Mourvedre vines. This variety is also a widely grown variety like Grenache. Mourvedre is a late ripening variety with a thick skin. As a result of the thick skin, the wine has a lot of tannins and deep red color.

Mourvedre is known to be a good blend-in with Grenache due to its high tannin content and the deep red color. This offsets the light color and the lesser tannins of Grenache. Also, the wine is known to be a good Rhone type blend-in. The vines thrive in warmer climates and are known to withstand harsh soil and climatic conditions while yielding a comparatively moderate harvest that is very high in tannins which contribute to its unique nature. However, this variety is a late ripening variety and even the wine itself is known to have a long shelf time and good aging qualities.

The wine is rarely produced as a single varietal wine. The reason is that Mourvedre produces wine high in tannins, high in color and acids that most of the wine lovers do not consider to be palatable. However, there are some rare and exceptional samples of single varietal Mourvedre wines.

Mourvedre is known to have spicy flavors and spicy aromas including clove, cinnamon and pepper. Mourvedre is considered to be a good match with lamb and other game meat dishes which the character of the wine very well match.
