Malbec
Although first grown in the French Bordeaux region in large quantities, this thin skinned grape is now grown as one of the primary grapes in Argentina and Chile. However, Malbec is one of the few grapes allowed to be grown in the Bordeaux region. This variety is primarily used for blending in the traditional wine growing areas while Argentinean and Chilean wine makers make single variety wines from this grape. The color of this wine is very deep and it inherits a lot of tannins and this wine had been traditionally used to give more complexity to clarets and wines like Cabernet Sauvignon.

The wine has fruity flavors such as plum & berries while there also are subtle flavors of spices. The tannins in the wine give it a very rich feel and the deep color. The vine grows well in warmer climates as it is in Argentina. The susceptibility of this vine to diseases in colder climates made it difficult to grow it in France while the climate in Argentina and Chile well complement the vine.

This wine ideally suits red meats and roast meats but it is a very versatile wine that can match many different dishes.  When blended with other wines, Malbec is used sparingly so that the flavor of the original wine such as Cabernet Sauvignon is enhanced.  However, with the success in the Argentina, Malbec come to be known as a good single varietal wine. Also, the vine has many synonyms which indicate the earlier popularity this vine had in France.
